The story of Ezra 10 takes place after the return of the Jewish exiles to Jerusalem. The people had begun to rebuild the temple, but were still struggling with the consequences of their past sins, particularly their intermarriage with foreign women.
In response to God’s call to repentance, Ezra reads the law to the people. The people are deeply convicted by their sin and make a solemn promise to separate themselves from the foreign wives.
